Members of aMpumalangasuspectedvehicle hijacking gang injured during a policechaseon Sundayare yet to appear in court, Hawks spokesmanBrigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said late on Monday.
“The court appearance day isTuesday,” Mulaudzi told 013NEWS.
One suspect was killed during the shoot-out when the Hawks police unitchased him to a house in Kriel, where 7 other men were.
“They opened fire on us. We called back-up and one of the suspects wasshot dead. One of our members was also shot and is in hospital,Mulaudzi said on Monday evening.
“Another 2 of the 8 suspects sustained injuries and are under 24 hourpolice guard in hospital as we talk,” he said.
After defeating the suspects, Mulaudzi said police recoveredstolen vehicles at the house – three BMWs, a Chrysler Voyager and a
Isuzu bakkie – as well as SANDF bullet-proof vests, explosives and
firearms.
“They will be charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensedfirearms and car hijacking when they appear in the Kriel MagistratesCourttomorrow(Tuesday),” said Mulaudzi, adding the suspects arebetween the age of 25 and 38 years.
