Hawks kill 4 of 18 Mpumalanga thugs

Four of eighteen men suspected of being a gang of heist robbers havebeen killed.

Four of the “five or six cars” that they were travelling in were alsoseized when cops swooped on the armed men near Secunda.

Hawks spokeswoman Captain Dineo Sekgotodi told 013NEWS on Tuesdaymorning that 9 of the men ran away, 5 were arrested and 4 killed.

Of the five suspects that were arrested, one is under police guard inan undisclosed Mpumalanga hospital following the shoot-out.

“Five or six cars were part of them and we called back up during chaseand a shoot-out occurred where four of the suspects were killed and oneinjured. We arrested five suspects and one of the arrested fivesuspects is in hospital. We also recovered four of the cars they wereusing and about 9 others ran away,” Sekgotodi said.

“Three of SAPS members were affected during the chase, with one losinghis life in a state car accident and two were injured and recoveringin hospital,” she said.

The incident took place between between Secunda and Delmas road onMonday around mid-day.

The Hawks police unit had suspected that one of the vehicles wasprobably transporting thugs and during chase “we saw there were manycars involved,” said Sekgotodi.

Then a chase began and a lot of cops arrived to back their colleagues up.Five firearms, including two AK47 and an R5, were found in the cars ofthe suspects.

“They will appear tomorrow at the Evander Magistrates Court facing variouscharges, including attempted robbery, attempted murder, and possession of unlicenced firearms,” said Sekgogodi.
