The ANCYL in the Gert Sibande region of Mpumalanga has decided that they will meet the officials of the Msukaligwa municipality in Ermelo…

The decision to meet municipal mayor Solomon Nkosi, speaker Mapulane Nkosi and other top officials of the Msukaligwa municipality comes after Eskom rolled out power cuts in the area due to owed money.

Msukaligwa is one of the 34 municipalities across the country which owes money to Eskom, amounting to over R10 billion and which rose in past few years from R6 billion.

The Msukaligwa municipality owes R139 million to Eskom – of which R42m is owed by businesses, R40m is owed by government and rest owed by households – and it announced last month that it will embark on power disruptions until this was paid.

Regional secretary James Nkosi said this has “badly affected” the people.

“We have taken an unapologetic decision and a stance to urgently meet with Msukaligwa municipal top officials, troika and members of the mayoral committee this coming Wednesday,” Nkosi said.

Nkosi said this, “due to non-payment of monies owed to Eskom” or any progress “to enter into a pragmatic signed payment plan,” has affected ordinary people, clinics, hospitals, schools and businesses.

“It is therefore for this reason that, we saw it crucial and necessary to urgently enter the space and forcefully commit the institution in ensuring that it speedily makes the required payments to Eskom and for them to re-strategise on their revenue collection plan,” Nkosi said.

“Any failure to comply, we will be left with no choice but to be forced to influence the ANC to excuse some and to do the necessary reshuffling to the aforementioned committees and strategic administrative positions,” he added.
