A senior Hawks official is facing jail after he allegedly stole R439 000 from the elite crime busting unit’s coffers.
Captain Richard Nkwanyana handed himself over to the Hawks in Middelburg on Monday where his colleagues locked him up.
The money was seized by the Police’s National Intervention Unit from two suspects during operations last year May in Cape Town.
The cases of the suspects together with the money were transferred to the Hawks in Mpumalanga by the intervention unit for investigation and Nkwanyama was the officer in charge.

“There was no evidence which linked both suspects to the suspected cash seizures. The two alleged suspects sought the intervention of private lawyers to retrieve their cash and this was granted by the Mbombela Magistrates Court,” said Bridagier Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, adding that an order was then granted against Nkwanyana in July this year to pay one of the suspects but couldn’t.
He was then arrested this week and charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
Nkwanyama, who has been barred from entering any Hawks premises, was released on R5000 bail and will return to court on 17 October 2017.
