Murders, rape and hijacking remain high in the Mpumalanga province.

National crime statistics released by police minister Fikile Mbalula this week shows serious crimes are on the increase in the province.

Rapes went up by 8.2% while murder increased by 11.1%. Hijacking of trucks decreased slightly, 0.1%.

Mbalula on Tuesday revealed that there has been a general decrease in crime stats by 1.8%.

“Yes, we have a 1.8% drop in crime but I do not feel it,” he said while presenting the statistics to the Police Portfolio Committee.

“Our people do not feel it,” he said.

“And they are correct. We have a drop in sexual violence, but we have more and more pictures of our women going missing. People must feel the drop in crime where they live,” Mbalula said

In other crimes, attempted murder went up by 11.1% in Mpumalanga from just last year, stock theft by 22.7% and house burglaries increased by 1.9%.

Car theft decreased by 0.6% while stealing belongings from parked vehicles went down by 6.0%.
