They knew cigarettes are very valuable and ambushed it.
A gang targeting a minibus transporting cigarettes is being sought by cops after one of them was nabbed by cops this week.
The police are asking anybody with information to help them find the men.
One of them made a brief appearance at the White River Magistrates Court this week Friday.
He is facing charges of robbery and possession of stolen goods and will return again for a formal bail application.
Now the cops are looking for the other men who fled the scene when one of the vehicles they were travelling in was stopped.
The incident happened along the White River/Hazyview Road on Thursday morning this week.
“Information at police disposal revealed that the driver and his crew noticed a blue Volkswagen Polo and a silver Toyota Hilux bakkie, with unknown number of occupants,” police spokesman Colonel Mtsholi Bhembe said.
He said the men inside the Polo suddenly pointed firearms at the two guards in the cigarette minibus forcing them to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The driver of the minibus pulled off the road and an unknown number of men swooped on them and soon offloaded the cigarettes onto their bakkie.
“The suspects then fled the scene after which a manhunt was launched by the police and a private security firm.
“A bakkie resembling the one in question was spotted somewhere along the same route. It was stopped and upon searching, the loot was found hence the arrest,” Bhembe said.
Anyone with information should call the cops on 082 455 6591 or 08600 10111.
