eMalahleni ANC heavyweight and minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu has died.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said Mthembu passed away earlier today (21 Jan 2021) due to Covid-related complications.
Mthembu served in various capacities in the ANC and government from President Mandela’s administration to the present day administration.
He was Mpumalanga’s first MEC of public roads and transport post 1994 and served as speaker of the Mpumalanga legislature among his other roles.
“Minister Mthembu was an examplary leader, an activist and a life-long champion of freedom and democracy,” Ramaphosa said.
“He was a much-loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, whose passing leaves our nation at a loss,” said Ramaphosa.
The president extended his condolences to the family, colleagues and “many friends” of the late minister.
