The house of lawmakers is calling for more harsher actions against any perpetrator of crime against women.

The Mpumalanga legislature has expressed its concerns on the rise of women abuse in the country, with the latest shocking incident being the rape of 8 young women by zama-zamas in Krugersdorp.

Mpumalanga is currently preparing its annual Women’s Parliament, scheduled for 12 August 2022.

Participants plan to use the gathering to cement the fight against the scourge of women abuse.

Nompumelelo Hlophe, chairwoman for the legislature’s portfolio committee on women, youth, children and people with disabilities said as women they are “strongly dissatisfied” with the perpetual abuse.

She made an example of the recent shocking incident in Krugersdorp in Gauteng where 8 women were gang-raped by illegal gold miners.

Over 80 men appeared in court this week, faced with numerous counts of illegal immigration and robbery.

The women had been at the mining area to shoot a music video. The video production crew were also robbed of their equipment before everyone was ordered by the armed zama-zamas to lie down before 8 of the 12 women were molested repeatedly.

“We must as women strongly express our dissatisfaction and condemnation of violent acts against women, like the in incident at Krugersdorp mine. What kind of people can actually involve themselves in such criminal acts against another human being,” said Hlophe.

Hlophe said such people deserve to be convicted and removed from society.

She said as a committee they are satisfied with the life sentence handed down to Ntuthuko Shoba – the man who hired killers to murder his pregnant girlfriend – Tshegofatso Pule – fearing that his wife would find out he cheated on her.

The Women’s Parliament will be held under the theme “Follow Up On Government Commitments, For a Better Life”

Legislature spokeswoman Zamagambu Memela-Gamede said the issue of violence against women will top the agenda at the upcoming Women’s Parliament.

She said it will “relate to escalating the fight against gender-based violence”.
