A member of a gang that attempted to blast an ATM machine was killed in shoot-out with a guard.

Cops said a group of armed men, who then fled in three cars, arrived at an eMbalenhle paypoint in Mpumalanga’s Secunda while elderly people were receiving their pension grants today and demanded to blow open the ATM machine with an explosive.

“A security guard and one of the robbers opened fire,” Mpumalanga cop spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said on Wednesday morning.

“And one of the robbers was fatally wounded,” he added. He said the aproximately 8 men fled scene in three vehicles, two white Mercedes Benzs and a silver grey Audi.

“A detonator was found already fitted in one of the teller machines when police arrived”, Hlathi said.

Anyone with information should call Secunda detectives on 0798915324.
