The battle to insert young people in the ANC is on.
The 40% that is widely talked about means a lot of things. Among others it also means that the ANC in the Mpumalanga regions must elect 10 young people to form part of the 25-member ANC regional executive committee.
This is called ‘40% inclusion of young people’.
The league in the Gert Sibande region is the one that first led the charge, telling regional mother-body leaders that 40% of 25 is 10.
Regional spokesman Thulasizwe Thomo said they want “10 politically matured current and former ANCYL members to be included as ANC REC members”.
But the league in the Nkangala region seems to be having a different view on the issue of having ten young people in the REC.
“Gert Sibande and Nkangala political dynamics aren’t the same,” regional leader Mduduzi Nkosi said.
“We are in a region that’s got a cream of leadership,” he said.
“[The] Main important part of our regional conference is unity and national policy position as a region,” he said, adding that there will be young people in the REC but not a specific number.
“We don’t discuss names but focus on unity and national policy conference then making sure that Mpumalanga is in the top 6 and our preferred comrade is DD Mabuza,” he said.
The league in the Bohlabela region wants provincial leader Tim Mashele to form part of the ANC REC in the region while ex-deputy president Ronald Lamola may emerge as member of the ANC provincial executive committee when leader David Mabuza leaves and a special congress is convened.

“We are saying the generational mix will prevail,” league spokesman Nhlamulo Mayindi said.
He said Makhosazana Masilela, who they want to return for yet another term as mother-body regional deputy secretary, is a young person.
“And in additional we want the current and former ANCYL leaders, Charmaine Masinga, Amos Skhosana, Mzwake Mbuzili, Cynthia Maphanga, Zodwa Godi, Thulani Morepe and Bunu Malandule.
Ehlanzeni ANCYL secretary Pholoso Mbatsane was not available for comment at the time of going to publish.
