The cops say he was no longer active in politics but served some time ago as the municipal council speaker.
The police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for the suspects who gunned down a former speaker of the Nkomazi local municipality this week.
The 55-year-old Victor Mashabane was kidnapped outside the gate of his house in KaMhlushwa on Tuesday night while he was trying to enter then was later found dead.
Police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said he was found in his car the next day – on Wednesday.
“According to information at police disposal, an unknown number of men bungled him in his vehicle and he was later found fatally shot in the vehicle,” Hlathi said.
He said they are appealing to anyone with information to come forward and assist the cops in nailing Mashabane’s killers.

Mashabane was the municipal council speaker before 2006. Hlathi said since then Mashabane had not been active in politics.
ANC regional secretary Phazamisa Mathe said they heard the sad news of Mashabane’s death and would visit his family in KaMhlushwa as an executive committee to send their heartfelt condolences.
He said they will be in a much better position to comment once police have completed investigations.
“We are meeting his family to offer our support as ANC in eHlanzeni. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family. May his soul rest in his peace,” Mathe said on Thursday night.
