In May 2017 Sgemegeme himself survived an attempt on his life, when unknown people fired gunshots at his car, escaping uninjured from the car that was riddled with bullet holes.
Mkhondo mayor Vusi ‘Sgemegeme’ Motha has revealed that there was a rumour doing the rounds across the Gert Sibande region of Mpumalanga that he was plotting to assassinate his political rival, regional chairman Muzi Chirwa.
Sgemegeme is Chirwa’s second-in-charge, being the regional deputy chairman…
Both do not see eye to eye, divided by the currently suspended ANC conferences where Sgemegeme supports Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane to succeed deputy president DD Mabuza in Mpumalanga and Chirwa supports acting ANC provincial chairman Mandla Ndlovu to hang on in there.
Sgemegeme responds to allegations levelled against him that he was plotting to get rid of his political rivals through down right assassinating them but this week the Piet Retief strongman said all this was sheer “nonsense”.
He told City Press he was able to sit down with Chirwa to discuss the rumours and both “agreed that this was nonsense”.
Both Chirwa and Sgemegeme are not new to assassination plots.
But now Sgemegeme is being accused of plotting to assassinate others, including Chirwa.
Ex-Mkhondo MMC for community safety Thembisile Khumalo told the national weekly that she had to leave Mkhondo completely when she and husband, taxi owner Vuyani Khumalo, received a tip-off about ruthless assassins being hired by Sgemegeme to set her and her family aside.
The councillor said after a fallout between her and Sgemegeme, she discovered in October 2019 that there was a plot to have her and other politicians killed by hitmen allegedly hired by Sgemegeme through a web of networks in the taxi organisations. She said others on Sgemegeme’s alleged hit-list have been murdered.

Thembisile said she had abandoned her work as councillor fearing for her life and is now living in an undisclosed area. She said they were once attacked while hiding in Gauteng – ambushed and fired with 12 bullets – while with her husband and two other people, and were thanking God they were still alive.
Motha has been accused of being corrupt to the core, driving top of the range cars and making large portions of resources available for his friends only.
During a protest in the area last year, residents spoke openly against Sgemegeme to the media and accused him of hiring hitmen to kill local leaders in the area.
Another official, Treasure Thabede, former manager municipal local economic development, made claims on Facebook about Sgemegeme plotting to kill him. He resigned in June 2019.
On 18 January 2020, Sgemegeme told scores of ANC branch leaders at the Mkhondo civic hall who had come to declare support for Mtshweni-Tsipane that there was nothing wrong with driving expensive cars as a long as an official delivered services to the people because that’s what they were elected for.

“There is a difference between me and the job that I’m doing, so you must know the difference. If you don’t have a Mercedes Benz stop insulting and talking about people who have Mercedes Benzs. Talk about what you have,” Sgemegeme said to thunderous applause.
“Then if you say I’m corrupt go to the relevant authorities and present the evidence so that they are able to take the appropriate actions, so we should not play like that comrades,” he said.
Sgemegeme has his sights set on replacing Chirwa as regional chair when a congress is held but could face a serious challenge from Chirwa’s preferred contender and Chief Albert Luthuli speaker Walter Mngomezulu.
He said the allegations by Thembisile are “nonsense” because in the first place the matter is not about her but about her husband Vuyani whom Sgemegeme received information that he was busy with plans of making money through some “dirty games” of threatening to reveal sensitive information about Sgemegeme…
He said he never met Vuyani though, and only received the information about his alleged plans.
He said he had spoken to Chirwa when the rumours started doing the rounds about his alleged plot to kill him and both “agreed that this is nonsense”.
Chirwa said they have good working relationship with Sgemegeme.
